As an actor, Mark Harmon is a great deal like the television show on which he stars, NCIS. Both are consistent workhorses that get their job done well without creating much fuss. Until now.
All of a sudden - if five years on the air counts as sudden - NCIS is one of TV's hottest shows in prime time. CBS executives, NCIS producers and Harmon himself can only speculate as to why the navy criminal drama is hotter than ever.
"From the beginning this group has been focused on doing the best show they can do," says Harmon, who, at 57, is a veteran having starred in TV Series for almost the past 30 years. "This show works as a unit. Its a pleasure to work for."
That hasnt always been true. At the end of season four, the show's creator Donald Bellisario left the program after a rift with the star. According to reports, Harmon thought the show could be better run without him. That departure could have caused the show to decline, but instead it seems to have spurred creativity among cast and crew.
"The show has changed a lot over the last couple of seasons," says Shane Brennan, who now co-executive produces with Charles Johnson. "We explore the characters more now and the audience has responded to that"
"And last season we built to a fairly big finale that got a lot of press and chatter. A lot of people were curious about how we would resolve that cliffhanger."
Last season, NCIS Director Jenny Shepard, played by Lauren Holly, was killed in a shootout. Shepard was entangled with Harmon's Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Brennan says that situation had played itself out.
"We have a new character - NCIS Director Leon Vance, played by Rocky Carroll - who brings a range of stories to the show," says Brennan.
Already, fans have developed a "real love-hate relationship" with Vance. "He goes toe-to-toe with Gibbs and they havent seen that before," Brennan Says.
While Brennan doesnt take direction from fans, he does check their reactions to the show.
"I follow all the chat rooms," he says. "A good example is that at the end of last season, Vance disbanded the team. I spent most of June doing interviews on the Internet reassuring people that the team would be back. The Internet really helped us sustain interest in the show."
Brennan says fans have a lot to look forward to: "We have a very interesting development coming up in the New Year where we learn more about Vance's past."
"I already know what the opening episode is for next season, and to have a knockout opener you have to have a knockout finale. We'll be taking the audience on one hell of a ride. There are more than a few surprises." This message was edited 1 time. Last update was at 11/30/2008 19:01:14
NY TImesUSA Today | |
